The Hobo and the Flapper

Today I'm participating in Angie's Flip camera giveaway, and she's asked us to post about Halloweens of our past.

I wish I had pictures to share because these were the best costumes ever, but all the pictures are at my parents' house, dammit.

When I was little my Mom always made my Halloween costumes and let me tell you, she had a definite knack for it. One of my favorites was a hobo costume that she made by sewing together a very old men's shirt and men's pants that she then cut to size, ripped, stained and patched. I held the requisite handkerchief on a stick, but the very best part of this costume? It was how Mom made my face look dirty by burning the end of a wine cork and smearing it all over my face. For me, that was just too fun!

My other favorite costume made by Mom was a flapper dress. I can't remember any of the details of it, just that it was red and shiny and she somehow gussied me up enough that I really did resemble a miniature flapper. I believe she even crafted one of those funky headbands they wore back in the 20s.

I think the next time I visit my parents I'm going to borrow some of their photo albums so I can start scanning and sharing. Won't that be fun?

What was your favorite Halloween costume?

Pssst! If you love me, you might love my stupid sister more. Go visit her at Jill's Believe it or Not, and tell her I sent you!

I think I dressed up as a hobo once. It's funny because I couldn't wait until I stopped trick or treating. I wanted to stay home and pass out candy instead.

  • Gucci Mama

I was a flapper in a play once. We did "Taming of the Shrew" set in the 20s. I looked HOT let me tell you.

We had homemade costumes too. Seems like people just don't do it that way anymore.

oh god...my fave costume was aunt jemima...probably very politically incorrect today...I was covered in black shoe polish...and i was a hobo pretty much every other year...was just easy to dress up in dads clothes

  • Cathy

How fun.. I never heard about the cork thing. I always went as a hobo at the last minute.. those years that {I was NOT going out and then decided to when friends showed up at the door.} Plus it was one of the warmest costumes being Oct in Ohio is usually cold.. Now a days it's short and tshirt weather.. I would love to see pictures. I need to scan a bunch in too but who the hell has the time...? I am lucky to get current ones up. Have fun and Happy Halloween to you and your monsters.. My monsters are still undecided on a plan for Sat.. they will probably run through the streets like hoodlums..

I wish you would scan some of your old pictures, that would be fun.
We always had homemade costumes, I don't ever remember buying one. I think they were the best.
My favorite one was a hawaiian dancer.

I have never had what you would call a GREAT costume. BUT my daughter (go visit her blog, she is on my side bar as Emma) she and her hubby win costume parties all the time. One time she was a spanish seniorita and he was Zoro. Holy freaking WOW is all I can say. She rocked.
Then my second husband (sorry, makes me sound like a fluzzie) hated to dress up, but had to one year for school (he is a teacher) So I had him black out both of his eyes and wear a white T-shirt that had the big letter P on it. Then when people asked he told them he was a "black eyed pea" Whaa ha ha ha.
    halloween is fun.

I don't remember many of my childhood costumes (and I have the same issue - my parents have all those pictures...I think I need to call my mom and have her mail me a bunch of them!)

I do remember dressing up as a hobo once, though! :)

When D was little he wore his Halloween costume (woody) Christmas shopping. Between Woody and Batman he was always in character.

Wow, talk about a coincidence. I blogged about Halloween costumes today too!

Not sure what my favorite one was, but I do remember fondly dressing up as a nurse one time. My mom lent me her nursing cap/hat thing that she wore in nursing school and I thought that was really cool.
